If you haven’t seen Eric Thomas’ Game Changer video from this morning I suggest you watch it. In his latest video he talks about the importance of reading, not for school or college or because your parents say you should but for yourself and off your own back.
On the 31st of Decemeber 2012, I made a New Year’s resolution to do just that and start reading for myself. As a kid I never enjoyed reading, maybe because at school I always heard that ‘boys don’t like reading’ or because playing sport is much cooler, either way I was sabotaging myself.
The problem with thinking this way about reading is that all our action and what we come to achieve and believe in life is simply down to the collection of experiences and knowledge that we’ve fed into our minds. This equations from Secrets of the Millionaire Mind (my current reading) book puts it perfectly for how reading can lead to wealth in both our minds and our wallets:
Books give you that feeling that gets you fire up and on your path to success. In the last 9 months I’ve managed to read 42 books and listen to several audio books, not bad for someone who didn’t like reading. I created this blog as a way to document my own personal growth, re-process what I’ve learned and share it with others in a way that I hope young people today can relate to and to help inspire action.
I can’t say that these books have made me a millionaire just yet, but what I can say is that they’ve managed to change everything about the way I perceived myself, my family and the opportunities available to me in life. To be honest, the fact that I’m writing this blog knowing full well that no one could be on the other end reading is proof that I’m no longer afraid to fail and I’m willing to give something a go without talking myself down from ever trying.
“Character isn’t something you were born with and can’t change, like your fingerprints. It’s something you weren’t born with and must take responsibility for forming.” – Jim Rohn
I’ll be putting together my own personal reading list from the last 9 months in the blog post following this one so please subscribe to my blog if you don’t want to miss it. Remember, If you’re not happy with were you’re at but know where you would like to go, then you’re going to have to learn to love reading, one sentence, paragraph, page, book at a time.
Some Reading Facts To Consider:
- A quarter of young people do not recognise a link between reading and success.
- Men and women with poor literacy are least likely to be in full-time employment at the age of thirty.
- Reading enhances the mind’s ability to comprehend, as well as encouraging you to think critically.
