We were in the hospital, waiting out side the surgery room. My little brother had been run over by a speeding driver and was having the two sides of his broken femur re-attached.
I had never seen my parents embrace, not even when they were together, and now years later they held each other and helplessly sobbed into each other’s arms.
I had always seen my parents as unbreakable, void of excess emotion, but it was that moment in life when you realise your parents are not super human, they’re vulnerable too.
Too often in society we try to put up a tough exterior, as if it’s something that should be honored. But the truth is, it’s only when we show our vulnerability that we are truly able to connect with others.
My brother’s fine and my parents still don’t like to talk, but that moment is forever mine, two humans fully embracing each other’s vulnerability. I feel kind of vulnerable sharing this blog post, but I guess that’s kind of the point.
It’s only when we show our vulnerability that we are truly able to connect with others.
