This week I met up with one of my closest friends who has started his own business. We got chatting and he told me that he was finding it really tough now that he had officially “started trading.”
“Cem, I think I need to hire some interns.”
It was there that I realised he was suffering from what I’m going to refer to as the ‘Business Card Mentality.’
Business Card Mentality is a more complex strain of procrastination. It’s the kind that gives you the buzz of feeling productive whilst avoiding doing the things that really matter.
Although he had managed to access funding, built a great website and even got some of his own fancy business cards printed, he was doing everything in his power to avoid starting the hard work in getting customers through the door!
“What you do for a living is not be creative, what you do is ship.” – Seth Godin
We’re all prone to the Business Card Mentality; it’s why we read books and blogs like this. Although they may give us a small shuffle in the right direction it’s up to us to take the leaps that get the real results.
After all, a business card is only as valuable as the person whose hand you put in, so stop avoiding the real work and get shipping!
